Botox Trends

By Ariel Mernal

Botox injections are nowadays popular as a 'quick fix' solution to younger looking skin. Its cosmetic applications have advanced significantly over the last few years, with more and more people now looking to undergo botox injections with the hope of getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles. What was once probably thought to be a procedure whose novelty might wear off one day is nowadays considered to be one that is here to stay.

There are sections in newspapers and magazines and segments on television that are dedicated to celebrities that have had botox in order to make their skin look more youthful. But the question on many people's mind is 'why is it so popular?' or 'what makes it such a sought after procedure?'

It's actually pretty easy to understand why. Ageing skin is a big problem, and people know that botox is inexpensive and effective. It's a fast treatment, there are no scars which can happen from plastic surgery, and it is pretty easy on the bank account. Because of the constant coverage by media about celebrity procedures, the public is more aware about botox nowadays.

Botox for men?

Many people think that botox is only something that women are interested in, but this is not true. The truth is to the contrary. Women are still more likely to get botox than men, but it is becoming more widely accepted for men to receive the treatments as well. Some newspaper reports have even gone to the extent of calling it 'bro-tox'! It's even about 50/50 men and women in certain clinics that administer botox treatments.

Changing trends

Botox is becoming more popular all the time. In one year, 2010 to 2011, it went up from 5.4 million, to 5.7 million botox patients, so it went up 5% in that year alone. Newer estimates suggest an annual rise of around 10% every year. This rising trend should come as no surprise. The previously attached 'stigma' and social attitude to botox injections being the treatment reserved for the wealthy no longer exists, and neither does any sense of any shame of undergoing the procedure. This procedure has become quite mainstream and popular.

There is more than this though. Many other non-cosmetic disorders can be treated by botox injections, including muscle spasticity disorders and other chronic conditions. Some of these conditions include blepharospasm, spastic paraparesis and cerebral palsy in both children and adults. There have been multiple reports of these treatments showing significant benefits for patients. Botox injections can be used to treat excessive sweating, and some have found success in using scalp injections to help to treat migraine headaches.

It's plain to see that botox is only gaining in popularity. There are always new studies being done and improvements being made, and the benefits of these treatments seem to be growing in number all the time.
